Sanibel Lighthouse: Standing Strong

Hurricane Ian

Sanibel Island’s iconic lighthouse stands tall and strong, a beacon to sailors and visitors alike since 1884.
Rising 98 feet above the shell-strewn beaches below, it has withstood countless tropical storms and
multiple hurricanes in its nearly 140 years of existence, including the hurricanes of 1926 and 1944,
Hurricane Donna in 1960, Charley (2004), Wilma (2005), and Irma (2017). But on September 28, 2022,
Hurricane Ian served up its greatest challenge. with winds over 150 MPH, the lighthouse and its
two cottages endured a storm surge ranging from 8-12 feet for hours on end. By the time the wind had
passed over and the seas subsided, only the lighthouse remained, its structure supported by three legs
instead of four. Sadly, the lighthouse keeper’s cottages were swept away, with only chimney remnants
left in the sand below.
Over the years, David Meardon has captured compelling images of these historical landmarks, which can
be viewed here. Take a moment or two to explore, if you wish.
